Chun’an has a long history. There were human activities on the land early In Neolithic age. Chun’an belonged to Wu State in Spring and Autumn Period, belonged to Chu State in Warring State Period and was under jurisdiction of Shexian  County in Qin Dynasty. In the 13th year in Jian’an reign of Eastern Han Dynasty (208 AD) , Sun Quan dispatched the mighty general of imperial garrison He Qi to assault Shanyue and separated Ye Township in the east from Shexian County to set up Shixin County and separated Wuqiang Township in the south from Shexian County to set up Xinding County. This was the beginning of Chun’an County and Shui’an County. In the first year in Taikang reign of Western Jin Dynasty (280AD), Xinding County was renamed Shui’an County. In the 9th year in Kaihuang reign of Sui Dynasty (589 AD), Shixin  County was renamed Xin’an County. Shui’an County and Shouchang county were incorporated into Xin’an County. In the 3rd year in Renshou reign (603AD), Shui’an County was separated from Xin’an County as an independent county. In the 3rd year in Daye reign (607AD), Xin’an County was renamed Zhishan County. In the first year in Wenming reign of Tang Dynasty (684 AD), Zhishan County restored to its original name of Xin’an County. In the 20th year in Kaiyuan reign (732 AD), Xin’an County was renamed Huanchun County. In the first year in Yongzhen reign (805AD), Huanchun was renamed Qingxi County to avoid emperor Xianzong’s name Li Chun.

In Three Kingdoms Period, Wu state set up Xindu Prefecture with Shixin County government under jurisdiction of the prefecture. In the first year in Taikang reign in Western Jin Dynasty (280 AD), Xindu Prefecture was renamed Xin’an Prefecture with the county still under jurisdiction of prefecture. In 9th year in Kaihuang reign of Sui Dynasty (589 AD), prefectures and states were set up and it belonged to Wuzhou State. In the 3rd year in Renshou reign (603AD), Muzhou State was set up and county was under jurisdiction of state and was subordinated to it. In the first year in Wuzhou Shenggong reign of Tang Dynasty (697AD), the capital of Kuizhou was moved to capital of Jiande County. In the 3rd year in Xuanhe reign in Northern Song Dynasty (1121AD), Kuizhou State was renamed Yanzhou  State. In the first year in Xianchun reign (1265AD), Yanzhou was renamed Jiande and was under jurisdiction of Weibian. In Yuan Dynasty, Chun’an and Shui’an were under jurisdiction of Jiande  Prefecture. In Ming and Qing Dynasty, it was under the jurisdiction of Yanzhou prefecture. In first reign year of the Republic of China period (1912), it was under jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province. In the 3rd year of Republic of China period (1914), it was under jurisdiction of Jinhua. In 24th year (1935), it was under jurisdiction of the 5th administrative supervision region. Later, it was subjected to many changes until in 1949, both Chun’an county and Shui’an county were subordinated to the 4th administrative supervision region. After liberation, it was first under jurisdiction of Jiande prefectural commissioner’s office. When Jiande prefectural commissioner’s office was removed In 1950, it was under jurisdiction of Jinhua prefectural commissioner’s office. In 1955, it was put under administration of the restored Jiande prefectural commissioner’s office. In 1958 when Jiande prefectural commissioner’s office was removed, Chun’an was under jurisdiction of Jinhua prefectural commissioner’s office. In 1963, Chun’an County was put under administration of Hangzhou City.
